BUCK MOUNTAIN
Ascent:
2000 ft
Round Trip Time: ??
Distance: 6.6 miles
Elevation: 2330 ft
This
peak can be hiked from both the North or the South. The South described
here has more elevation gain and is also steeper. The views along the way
make this more challenging route worth the extra work.
Starting
relatively easy the trail passes through a forest of basswood, birch,
white pine, oak, maple, sumac and large grapevines. After crossing
Butternut brook at 0.4 miles the trail begins to steepen. After each steep
section the trail usually levels off to rest for a bit.
At
3.3 miles the summit is reached. This rocky peak is a local favorite with
excellent views of Lake George and the surrounding mountains.
